Key points

  • Dr. Shershow is licensed in New Jersey and New York and sees adults 18 and older; follow-up visits are by secure video.
  • The Valley Hospital moved from Ridgewood to its Paramus campus, opening there on April 14, 2024.
  • Under P.L.2026, c.40, adults in New Jersey who start a Schedule II stimulant after a telehealth first examination need an in-person visit within 30 days and at least yearly.
  • Bergen County's designated psychiatric emergency screening service is Care Plus NJ at New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus.
  • Ridgewood is on NJ Transit's Main/Bergen County Line; a visit from Secaucus Junction or Hoboken is still a New Jersey visit.

Ridgewood, in Bergen County, is a stop on NJ Transit's Main/Bergen County Line. Adults here who start asking about ADHD are often commuters, parents who began to wonder about themselves during a child's school years, or students at the colleges in Mahwah and Paramus. This page covers what is specific to getting adult ADHD care as a Ridgewood-area resident, including a few local changes people miss. It does not describe an office in Ridgewood. The office can tell you how visits are arranged.

Valley Hospital is no longer in Ridgewood

If you still think of The Valley Hospital as a Ridgewood institution, note that it has moved. Valley Health System's own pages say the new Valley Hospital opened on its Paramus campus on April 14, 2024. If you are thinking of the hospital emergency department in a crisis, that move matters. Bergen County's psychiatric emergency screening service is also in Paramus (see below).

Which state's rules apply to your visits

For any video visit, the clinician must be licensed in the state where you are physically located. New Jersey's telehealth statute, as amended by P.L.2026, c.40, requires a New Jersey license for a patient in New Jersey, and New York's licensing guidance requires a New York license for a patient in New York. Dr. Shershow holds both licenses.

For adults in New Jersey on a Schedule II stimulant whose first examination was by telehealth, c.40 (effective July 8, 2026) requires an in-person visit within 30 days, an in-person visit or real-time video contact every three months after that, and an in-person visit at least once a year. If you will be in New Jersey for your visits, the office will explain how visits are arranged so these requirements are met. A visit you take from a private room at work in Manhattan is a New York visit instead, and New York follows the federal DEA telemedicine flexibilities, extended through December 31, 2026.

Commuting on the Main and Bergen County lines

NJ Transit lists Ridgewood station on its Main/Bergen County Line. Those trains also stop at Secaucus Junction, which is served by the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines as well, so riders can change there for Northeast Corridor trains toward New York. Each leg of that trip matters for location:

Home in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus or nearbyNew JerseyNew Jersey rules, including c.40 for stimulants

Tell the office where you are at the start of every visit. The fuller treatment for commuters is ADHD care for New Jersey commuters who work in New York City.

Parents, and adults only

For many families, ADHD first comes up through a child's school. Dr. Shershow sees adults 18 and older and does not treat children or teens. If a child's evaluation made you wonder about your own focus, organization or restlessness, an adult evaluation looks at your own history, including childhood and school, work, health, sleep and other explanations such as anxiety or depression. A childhood record is helpful but not always available; evaluations without childhood records explains how that is handled.

College students in northwest Bergen

  • Ramapo College of New Jersey (Mahwah): the Office of Specialized Services (OSS) handles accommodations.
  • Bergen Community College (Paramus): Disability Services is also called the Office of Specialized Services.

Each office decides accommodations on its own documentation standards. Ask what it accepts before booking an evaluation for that purpose. Dr. Shershow provides the psychiatric evaluation, not psychological or neuropsychological testing, and no evaluation can guarantee a diagnosis or accommodations paperwork. See ADHD accommodations at New Jersey colleges.

Students who come to Ramapo from another state, or who go home to New York for breaks, should plan around the location rule. Visits taken from a dorm in Mahwah are New Jersey visits, and a prescription from a home-state clinician who is not licensed in New Jersey cannot simply continue by video while you are on campus. Sorting this out before the semester starts avoids a gap in treatment. See out-of-state students and ADHD care in New Jersey.

Filling prescriptions in Bergen County

New Jersey limits a single Schedule II prescription, which includes stimulants such as methylphenidate and amphetamine products, to a 30-day supply. A prescriber may write several prescriptions totaling up to 90 days, each with an earliest fill date, when that does not create undue risk (N.J.A.C. 13:35-7.6). Federal rules bar Schedule II refills. Before starting any controlled substance, New Jersey prescribers take a history, examine the patient, make a reasonable effort to get past records, check the state Prescription Monitoring Program and write a treatment plan (N.J.A.C. 13:35-7.6(b)). Call your pharmacy before each prescription is sent to confirm it has the exact product. See the ADHD medication shortage in New Jersey for what to do when it does not.

Bergen County resources that are not the practice

Dr. Shershow's practice is not an emergency service. If anyone is in danger, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

  • Psychiatric emergency screening: Bergen County's designated service is Care Plus NJ at New Bridge Medical Center, 230 East Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus. 24-hour line: 201-262-4357 (state directory updated October 8, 2026).
  • County mental health administrator: the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services within the Bergen County Department of Health Services, Hackensack.
  • Vocational rehabilitation: New Jersey's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services lists a Hackensack office, 60 State Street, for Bergen County (state table dated August 2024; call to confirm).

Questions

Can I get an ADHD evaluation online if I live in Ridgewood?

Video visits are possible while you are physically in New Jersey or New York, because Dr. Shershow is licensed in both. Follow-up visits are by secure video. Call the office to ask how the first visit is arranged. If a stimulant is started after a telehealth first examination in New Jersey, an in-person visit is required within 30 days.

Does Dr. Shershow have an office in Ridgewood?

This page is for Ridgewood-area residents and does not describe an office there. Call the office to ask how visits are arranged.

Do I need a referral?

That usually depends on your insurance plan. Check your plan and call the office to ask how insurance works with the practice.

Is ADHD testing the same as a psychiatric evaluation?

No. A psychiatric evaluation is a clinical diagnostic assessment, which Dr. Shershow provides. Neuropsychological or psychological testing is a separate service done by psychologists and is not offered by this practice.

My child was just diagnosed with ADHD. Can I be evaluated too?

Yes, if you are 18 or older. Dr. Shershow evaluates adults only, looking at your own history from childhood through now and at other explanations for your symptoms. He does not treat children or teens.

Is Valley Hospital still in Ridgewood?

No. Valley Health System says The Valley Hospital opened on its Paramus campus on April 14, 2024. For a psychiatric emergency in Bergen County, the designated screening service is Care Plus NJ at New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus (201-262-4357), or call 988 or 911.

I study at Ramapo. Can I use this evaluation for accommodations?

Ramapo's Office of Specialized Services decides accommodations, and no evaluation can guarantee them. Ask OSS what documentation it accepts first, since some schools want psychological test scores, which this practice does not provide.
