Key points
- Two of the four CHADD chapters listed in New York State are on Long Island, and both were confirmed active in October 2026.
- Suffolk County CHADD runs a Zoom support group for adults and their significant others.
- Stony Brook Psychiatric Associates treats people 18 and older, but its named ADHD testing program is described for children and adolescents.
- No Northwell Health page describing an adult ADHD program was found.
- Nassau County's Behavioral Health Helpline is 516-227-TALK (8255); a current Suffolk County crisis number was not confirmed, so Suffolk residents should use 988.
Long Island has the strongest confirmed peer support for adult ADHD in New York State and, at the same time, no hospital program that this guide could confirm as dedicated to adult ADHD. Both CHADD chapters, in Nassau and in Suffolk, are active. The island's academic medical center, Stony Brook, describes its named ADHD services for children and adolescents. This article sets out what is confirmed for Nassau and Suffolk, what is not, and the routes residents actually use.
What is confirmed, and what is not
| Resource | County | Status on October 13, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Suffolk County CHADD | Suffolk | Confirmed active. Runs an "Adult, Significant Other Support Group" on Zoom on Wednesday evenings; registration required. Contact suffolk-county@chadd.org. |
| Nassau County CHADD (Elmont) | Nassau | Confirmed active. Monthly meetings with registration, including a presentation on parent and adult advocacy and a support group in October 2026. Contact nassau-county@chadd.org or 516-242-3263 by text. |
| Stony Brook Psychiatric Associates | Suffolk | Confirmed: psychiatric evaluation and treatment for people 18 and older, 631-632-2428. Its named ADHD services and ADHD Testing Program are described for children and adolescents. Adult ADHD testing there is not confirmed. |
| Northwell Health, including Zucker Hillside Hospital | Nassau and Queens border | Not confirmed. No Northwell page describing adult ADHD evaluation or treatment was found. |
| Nassau County Behavioral Health Helpline | Nassau | Confirmed on the county page: 516-227-TALK (8255), with mobile crisis. Hours are not stated there. |
| A Suffolk County crisis number | Suffolk | Not confirmed on a current official page. Use 988. |
"Not confirmed" means the institution's own page did not say it. Northwell is a very large system and Stony Brook's adult psychiatry practice may well see adults with ADHD in the ordinary course of general psychiatric care. The only way to know is to call and ask the specific question: do you evaluate adults for ADHD, and do you prescribe for it?
The two CHADD chapters
CHADD lists four chapters in the whole state, and two of them are on Long Island. Both are volunteer-run peer organizations offering meetings, speakers and the company of people dealing with the same condition. Neither evaluates, diagnoses or prescribes.
Suffolk's adult group is the only one in the state that this guide found described as being for adults and their significant others together, which makes it a practical starting point for couples. Its page listed meeting dates of October 21, November 18 and December 16, 2026. Nassau's chapter serves parents and adults and posts a monthly calendar.
Dates and times change. Confirm on the chapter's own page, linked under Sources, before you plan around a meeting. The rest of the state's options are in adult ADHD support groups and organizations in New York.
Where Long Islanders get evaluated and treated
With no confirmed hospital adult ADHD program on the island, care comes through four routes.
- Primary care. For many adults in Nassau and Suffolk the family doctor or internist is the first stop. Some diagnose and treat adult ADHD themselves and some refer out. The trade-offs are in psychiatrist or primary care doctor for adult ADHD?
- Private psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners, found through your insurer's directory and checked on the State Education Department's license verification search.
- The Manhattan hospital programs. NYU Langone and Mount Sinai run the two named adult ADHD programs confirmed in the state. For western Nassau that is a train ride. From the East End of Suffolk a round trip can take most of a day, which is a real cost for anything requiring repeated in-person visits.
- Telehealth with a New York-licensed clinician. Video visits are available statewide, subject to the rules. Through December 31, 2026, federal rules allow stimulant medication to be prescribed after an audio-video visit without a prior in-person evaluation. What applies from 2027 had not been published as of October 2026. For how the practice that publishes this guide arranges visits, see appointments and telehealth.
Geography shapes the choice more than it does in the city. Suffolk County runs the length of the island out to Montauk and Orient Point, and its North and South Forks are far from any academic center. Residents there lean on local primary care and on video visits.
When the insurance directory fails
If your plan is regulated by New York (fully insured commercial plans, marketplace plans, Medicaid managed care and the Essential Plan), it must be able to offer a first outpatient behavioral health appointment within 10 business days. You also have the right to ask for an in-person appointment instead of telehealth.
The right runs through a process. You file an access complaint with the insurer by phone or on its website. The insurer has three business days to locate an in-network provider who can treat the condition and is a reasonable distance away. Only if none is available must it approve an out-of-network provider, with your copay, coinsurance and deductible the same as in network.
Two cautions apply. If your coverage comes through a large employer, the plan may be self-funded, and self-funded plans, like Medicare, fall outside the rule. And "a reasonable distance" is the insurer's first judgment to make, which matters on the East End. The complaint steps and phone numbers are in can't find an in-network psychiatrist?
Students at Stony Brook
Stony Brook University's Counseling and Psychological Services states that it does not prescribe stimulant medications without a current neuropsychological evaluation, and warns that such testing can be expensive. It points students to the university's Krasner Psychological Center or to off-campus providers for testing. Psychiatric consultations at the counseling service are free for eligible students, but medication is not covered by the student health fee.
Students at other Long Island campuses should read their own health center's policy. The general picture is in ADHD in college and graduate students in New York.
Public and crisis resources
Each county has a mental health department that oversees local clinics, and Nassau's publishes its helpline on the county site. County-licensed clinics treat a broad range of conditions; ask any clinic directly whether it evaluates adults for ADHD.
In a crisis, call or text 988 from either county. Nassau residents can also call the county Behavioral Health Helpline at 516-227-TALK (8255). No peer group, helpline or crisis line evaluates for ADHD or prescribes.
A short checklist for Nassau and Suffolk residents
- Ask your primary care clinician whether they evaluate and treat adult ADHD, or whom they refer to.
- Request your insurer's list of in-network psychiatric clinicians who treat adults with ADHD, and note the date you asked.
- Verify any clinician's New York license before the first visit.
- If no appointment is offered within 10 business days and your plan is New York-regulated, file an access complaint.
- Register for a CHADD meeting while you wait.
Questions
Where can I get an adult ADHD evaluation on Long Island?
No hospital program dedicated to adult ADHD was confirmed in Nassau or Suffolk. Evaluations are done by private psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychologists and some primary care clinicians, in person or by video. Ask each office whether it evaluates adults and verify the clinician's New York license.
Does Stony Brook test adults for ADHD?
Stony Brook Psychiatric Associates provides psychiatric evaluation and treatment for people 18 and older, but the ADHD Testing Program on its page is described for children and adolescents. Adult ADHD testing there was not confirmed, so call 631-632-2428 and ask.
Are the Long Island CHADD groups only for parents?
No. Suffolk County CHADD lists a support group for adults and significant others, and Nassau County CHADD's October 2026 calendar included a presentation on parent and adult advocacy. Both require registration.
Is it worth traveling to Manhattan for an adult ADHD program?
NYU Langone and Mount Sinai run the only named adult ADHD programs confirmed in the state, and they offer evaluation, medication, therapy and testing in one place. Neither page states fees or insurance terms, and the trip from eastern Suffolk is long, so ask about cost, wait time and video visits before deciding.
Who do I call in a mental health crisis in Suffolk County?
Call or text 988, which works in every New York county at any hour. A county-specific Suffolk number was not confirmed on a current official page for this guide, so it is not printed here.
