Key points
- CHADD's chapter locator lists three New Jersey chapters: Bergen County CHADD (Teaneck), CHADD of Mercer County (Princeton) and TRI-CHADD NJ (Howell).
- CHADD of Mercer County runs an adult support group on Zoom on the second Tuesday of each month, with dates posted from September 2026 to June 2027.
- Bergen County CHADD lists a morning and an evening adult ADHD group and an in-person support group at the Bergenfield Library, and says its events are free.
- NAMI New Jersey runs free online NAMI Connection groups for adults with any mental health condition; its HelpLine (1-866-626-4664) is open weekdays 9 am to 4 pm.
- The New Jersey Self-Help Group Clearinghouse, run by the Mental Health Association in New Jersey, helps people find or start support groups at 800-367-6274.
Peer support for adults with ADHD in New Jersey exists, but it is thin and patchy. Three chapters of CHADD, the national ADHD organization, are listed for the state, and only two of them showed current adult programs when this page was researched. Most other options are general mental health groups or national groups that meet online. This directory lists what was confirmed on each organization's own page on October 19, 2026, says what each one does and does not do, and says plainly where nothing could be confirmed.
Check before you go. Volunteer groups change days, links and contacts often. Every detail below was read on the organization's own page on October 19, 2026. Confirm on that page, linked under Sources, before you attend.

CHADD chapters in New Jersey
CHADD's affiliate locator lists three New Jersey chapters and no others. CHADD's national line, 1-866-200-8098, answers general ADHD questions on weekday afternoons, according to the locator page.
CHADD of Mercer County
The chapter page gives a Princeton address, but meetings are on Zoom, and people can also join by phone. The Adult Support Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 pm. Posted dates run from September 8, 2026 to June 8, 2027, with no meetings in July and August. The page names volunteer facilitators and lists contacts, including Kim Walter at 609-610-3649. It also mentions a young adult group for high school and college students and points to a nearby Pennsylvania chapter that meets on the same night.
Bergen County CHADD
This volunteer-run chapter says its workshops, speakers and events are always free. Its page lists:
- An in-person support group at the Bergenfield Library "Friends" Meeting Room on the first and third Tuesday of each month, 7 to 8:30 pm, with no sign-up needed.
- AM Adults with ADHD on the second and fourth Thursday, 11 am to noon.
- PM Adults with ADHD on the third Monday, 7:30 to 8:30 pm.
- A monthly speaker series on Zoom, with recordings of past talks.
For groups that need registration, the page asks people to sign up at least 30 minutes before the start to receive the Zoom link. The page shows a recurring schedule but no specific 2026 dates, so check it, or use its contact page, before the first time you go.
TRI-CHADD NJ
TRI-CHADD NJ describes itself as New Jersey's state representative chapter, based in Howell. Its Meetup page listed no upcoming events. The most recent events shown were in-person daytime meetups for adults in Manalapan Township, the last on September 8, 2025. Because nothing newer was posted, this guide cannot confirm the chapter is meeting. The page lists trichaddnj@chadd.net and 732-552-8012 (weekdays) as contacts. Ask before you plan around it.
NAMI New Jersey and other statewide groups
These organizations do not run ADHD-specific groups, but they are useful when anxiety, low mood or family strain sit alongside ADHD.
- NAMI New Jersey (North Brunswick). Runs NAMI Connection, a free, peer-led recovery support group for adults 18 and older with any mental health condition. Its statewide online groups meet on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm and Wednesdays at 7 pm, with registration by 11 am on the day. There is also a monthly online group for LGBTQ+ adults and a Spanish-language online group. NAMI's national directory lists affiliates covering most counties, plus a New Jersey Virtual Affiliate.
- NAMI NJ HelpLine: 1-866-626-4664, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. It is a peer-support information and referral line. NAMI New Jersey says it is not a crisis line and cannot give counseling or referrals to individual clinicians.
- New Jersey Self-Help Group Clearinghouse: 800-367-6274. A service of the Mental Health Association in New Jersey, funded by the state Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services. It keeps a listing of self-help groups and helps people start new ones, with free training for group leaders. If no ADHD group meets near you, this is the office that can help you start one.
- NJ MentalHealthCares: 866-202-HELP (4357), 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week, according to the state's hotline list. Staff offer free, confidential emotional support, information and referral.
Online groups open from anywhere
The Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA) is a national organization for adults. Its virtual programs page lists recurring peer groups on Eastern Time, including groups for beginners, women, women over 50, men, young adults, partners, Black adults, South Asian adults, Asian adults, entrepreneurs and people dealing with ADHD at work. It also lists body-doubling sessions, in which people work quietly alongside each other on video. The page describes the groups as for ADDA members and links to a membership page, but it does not state prices or which groups require membership. Check before you sign up.
Online groups suit people in parts of the state with no local chapter, which, based on CHADD's list, is most of New Jersey outside Bergen and Mercer.
What a support group can and cannot do
A good group offers company, practical ideas and the relief of hearing your experience described by someone else. No group on this page evaluates, diagnoses or prescribes, and none can tell you whether ADHD explains your difficulties. Forums and social media groups can be good company, but they are unmoderated and are poor sources of medical information.
Two limits matter:
- A support group is not a crisis service. In a crisis, call or text 988. The full list of crisis options, including each county's psychiatric emergency screening center, is in mental health crisis resources in New Jersey.
- A support group is not a route to treatment. If you want an evaluation, start with how to get an adult ADHD diagnosis in New Jersey. If cost is the obstacle, see low-cost ADHD care in New Jersey.
Choosing among them
- You want to meet people in person: Bergen County CHADD's library group, after checking the schedule.
- You want an adult group you can join from home: Mercer County CHADD on Zoom, or an ADDA virtual group.
- You are a partner or family member: ADDA's partners group or NAMI New Jersey's family programs. See also adult ADHD and relationships.
- You live near the New York line: several New York chapters also meet on Zoom; see adult ADHD support groups in New York.
Peer support works alongside clinical care, not in place of it. Dr. Shershow is a psychiatrist who focuses on adult ADHD and is licensed in New York and New Jersey. How the evaluation works is on the adult ADHD evaluation page, and the new patients page explains how to start.
Questions
Is there an adult ADHD support group in New Jersey that meets in person?
Bergen County CHADD lists an in-person support group at the Bergenfield Library on the first and third Tuesday of each month, 7 to 8:30 pm. The page showed no specific 2026 dates, so confirm on the chapter's site before going.
Is there a CHADD chapter in Central or South Jersey?
CHADD lists Mercer County CHADD, which meets on Zoom, and TRI-CHADD NJ in Howell. TRI-CHADD NJ showed no events after September 2025. CHADD lists no chapter for South Jersey, so online groups are the dependable option there.
Do I need a diagnosis to join a support group?
None of the CHADD or NAMI pages reviewed for this guide said a diagnosis was required. NAMI Connection is open to adults who have experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. Ask the group if you are unsure.
Are these groups free?
Bergen County CHADD says its events are always free, and NAMI New Jersey says NAMI Connection is free. ADDA's page links to paid membership options without saying which groups require membership, so check before you sign up.
Can a support group help me get diagnosed or get medication?
No. Support groups offer peer support and information. They do not evaluate, diagnose or prescribe. For that you need a licensed clinician who can perform an evaluation.
